A Delegation From Bangladesh Visits Microbial Gene Bank (NAIMCC) Of ICAR-NBAIM

A three member delegation led by Dr. Jahangir Alam, Chief Scientific Officer, National Institute of Biotechnology, Dhaka, Bangladesh visited National Agriculturally Important Microbial Culture Collection (NAIMCC) and other laboratories of ICAR-NBAIM, Mau to understand structure and function of NAIMCC, in order to set up a similar “Microbial Gene Bank” in Bangladesh.

The delegation consisted of Dr. Jahangir Alam, Chief Scientific Officer & Head, Animal Biotechnology Division, National Institute of Biotechnology, Dhaka, Bangladesh, Md. Abdul Momin, Ministry of Science & Technology, Bangladesh and Ms. Rakiba Puna, Architect, Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission, Bangladesh.

At the outset, Dr. Arun K. Sharma, Director, ICAR-NBAIM welcomed the members of the Bangladesh delegation and briefed about research achievements and activities of ICAR-NBAIM including microbial holdings in National Agriculturally Important Microbial Culture Collection (NAIMCC). Subsequently, Dr. Alam said that the purpose of visit to NBAIM is to get information and gain knowledge to establish Gene Bank in Bangladesh.

To accomplish objectives of Bangladesh delegation, Dr. Sushil K. Sharma, Principal Scientist & In-charge NAIMCC briefly presented status of the microbial gene pool, conservation strategies and service activities of NAIMCC, including infrastructure required for developing a gene bank in Bangladesh. Besides, all the members of delegation went around other laboratories including genomic and bioinformatics laboratories to see the ABI sequencer, pyrosequencer, supercomputer and other facilities.
